I have an elitebook 2540p, the model that uses a 1.8 inch drive. I actually replaced this drive with an intel SSD a while back. This has been an excellent notebook and has the i7 dual 640 L Processor.

It has been heatiing up and shutting down during downloads such as a movie. I cannot remove and clean the fan as I have tried everything including trying to follow the repair manual.

What I would like to know as if the motherboard has a removable processor. CPUID says PGA which is indicative of a socket mounted processor, however from what I can see from underneath the fan there does not to appear to be enough room for a socket. If there were a socket then new thermal paste would probably cure the problem. But if not, I am out of luck. The fan runs properly and I have cleaned it as well as can be without removing it which I can't seem to do.

I apologize if this is the incorrect subject line to post and hope it gets read and re-directed.

I love elitebooks, I have the HP 8440P and the larger HP 8570P in our house. These two are very easy to work on to replace thermal grease or upgrade. But, the 2540p is a nightmare.

What is the ambient temperature in the room(s) it is used in? Normal or excessively warm?

If you can't take the system apart, it doesn't matter what type CPU it has (and in any case, whether it is a socket or not won't stop you from applying fresh thermal paste).

Which Intel SSD do you have? What other ports can you use for a storage subsystem? Or is there only one?

Does a notebook cooler (like a Zalman) work to keep it cool?

If it is shutting down while just downloading a movie (how long is that taking?), then a new platform may be the better answer (could be many things wrong at this point; M/B being the worst one).

The Dell, HP and fruity companies computers have always run too hot/noisy for my tastes. And they are the ones that break down more too.

Hope you can fix your issues. Keep going back to that manual and learn how to take it apart first. :)

It is only about 70 deg F in the room. I do use a laptop cooler of good quality. I have the complete manual but it is a major effort to completely disassemble to get the fan out which of course you say then thermal paste could be applied. If I run the intel processor diagnostic test it will shut down fairly quickly. It runs about 50 C at idle. Depending on the size of a movie download it may or may not overheat. A download for example of 1 ghz and it will hang in there. Above that probably shut down. Very seldom shut down normal use or browsing. If I was on you tube or AOL and it was a clip of longer than a couple minutes it will shut down. When I first got it a couple of years ago I could download multiple movies and compress a couple movies at the same time, no problem. Now I cannot even compress movies at all without a shutdown. I compress a lot of movies using different programs. It is probably time to retire it anyway. The other 2 elitebooks I have which are the 8440p and 8570p are very easy to clean re-apply thermal compound and even change the cpu or any other thing. If I would have known it had the 1.8 inch HDD I wouldn't have got this. It is a pain, they are very expensive. I have a Intel xm series SSD which works fine so it is even lower power. I used to even have another hard drive in my optical bay for a two drive system since the original 160gb and 320gb drives are so small and very expensive. Overall, a very well made computer and gave me really good performance. Maybe I overstressed the cpu with all the work I threw at it. Even though Intel cpu's have thermal protection it was stressed hard. But a perfect size to just haul off to the mall or whatever with a lot of options most do not have. Thanks for the reply.

Just forgot to mention my other two elitebooks run exceptionally cool, about 32 C to 40C and barely up to 50C when stressed. I think the elitebooks are of course built very well. I had other HP notebooks that really were not very good computers. These elitebooks I swear by. I am not a gamer at all and upgraded everything to i7 and they run cool.

Hmmm... does that model have a dedicated GPU?

The Graphics are inside the Processor Chip

just for the record, no, it is not a socketed CPU, it's soldered to the mainboard
