I dug up this very old, but still operational Toshiba 430cdt laptop from the basement and installed DOS 7.10 on it, since I do not have Win98/95 setup disks. DOS7.10 is supposed to have support for a CD-ROM, as long as it has the right .sys driver.

Apparently, my CD-ROM is not an IDE-CD (thats the driver that comes with DOS7.10) and is not detected by DOS at all. The BIOS supports only FDD/HDD startup. I do have an FDD, which does work with DOS, but I only have 2 floppies that work properly. I am unsure if they will hold out for any longer, they are very old.

So I want to make the CD drive work, but I cannot find the right drivers. The drive itself is internal and works (I put a cd in, the light flashes and the CD spins, and I can hear the head move.)

I tried following the instructions on that web-page, but to no avail due to a number of setbacks:
    1. I do not have the toscdrom.sys file that is mentioned in there, so I downloaded one from the first result in a google search (TOSCDROM.SYS).
    2. I am doubtful that is exactly the same file that I need.
    3. It is not exactly the same issue I have, but it is similar.
    4. It didn't work.

At DOS startup (after I edited config.sys and autoexec.bat) I got this:
    Device driver not found: MSCD001
No valid CDROM deice drivers selected.

Anyone know how I can get this to work? I like that laptop and it is going to be a lot easier to play around with it if I had a CD-ROM.
