Hey all,
I have the above laptop and its equipped with the Mobile Intel GL960 Express Chipset and this chipset supports max 2GB RAM?
Now can I add 4gb ram?
It says its 533mhz FSB yet I have upgraded to 800mhz? So would it work?
-
If you put 4GB of RAM in there, it will either not boot or boot with only 2GB enabled. That is a chipset limitation ( source).
Also note that while you installed 800MHz RAM, it is only running at 533MHz. -
sorry the 800mhz is the FSB, I upgraded the CPU and it said it couldnt take it???
-
The FSB can only run as fast as the chipset and processor allow (and runs at the slower of the two speeds). The RAM speeds run at the slowest of three factors (CPU supported RAM speed, chipset supported RAM speed, RAM's rated speed).
-
I understand all that,
I think Im confusing what I am saying.
My laptop specs from toshiba say it wont work above 533mhz FSB yet it is running a 800mhz processor, It also says no more than 2gb in memory. Could it also be a load of crap to make me buy new laptop?
That was all I was getting at when I mentioned FSB and CPU's
-
Try running CPU-Z to confirm (1) processor, (2) chipset, and (3) memory speeds. Post a few screenshots from there and we'll have a better idea what's inside that laptop.
I'm a little rusty on the older hardware, but some chipsets supported CPUs with higher FSB but could not run them at that higher FSB. The Pentium M comes to mind specifically; there were 533MHz FSB variants that, if I remember correctly, ran with chipsets that supported 400MHz FSB max and as a result the processors would be downclocked. Again, a bit rusty here. CPU-Z will help out a lot.
I've been in QPI land with newer Intel processors for too long.

click the CPUz link in my signature, Screen dump there
-
Yeah, those signatures don't show up in all the skins for NBR so I didn't see that initially. There is something *very* goofy about that data. The chipset shouldn't be capable of running at those speeds unless there is an undocumented feature in the chipset. I'm going to pick the other moderators on the board to see if any of them are more familiar with this chipset.

There is a HUGE 10 page thread on this forum about this upgrade. Any 800mhz FSB cpu will work on this chipset. That very thread is my reason for joining this forum,
Im certain that it would be capable, I mean if it can run a higher FSB than stated then why would it not? On reply #8 in that thread one guy ran 3gb no problem.
Thanks in advance. -
Sounds like an undocumented feature of the chipset. Enjoy
