Sorry to bring another "ive got a computer problem" thread but really i have no where else to ask :(

Ive noticed recently that after several hours my laptop cpu usage starts hitting high % even tho i am not doing anything apart from firefox, initially i thought it was firefox's fault.
Now that was just minor mouse lag and audio used to stutter, but i left my laptop on all night and my god... the cpu usage wud jump between 50-90% for no reason what so ever! the whole computer became massively sluggish... :(
Im afraid this is soon going to become routine since its been developing over a period of time, and since i dont know when it began a system restore wont help either

Do u guys have any idea? task manager says "system idle process" is 60% but thats a lie because the cpu is maxing out

    thankyou

    Okay lets start :D
First, I have read that somewhere in this forum that some firefox plugins eats the CPU and RAM (Think it is a bug or something but I'm not sure becouse I don't use FireFox).
Anyway, after what I have seen this can be a type of Virus. I'm not able to see your attached screenshot. I'm at school right now. The first thing i suggest you to do is to download a Antivirus program. I highly recommend you Kaspersky Internet Securty 2009 wich I use on my own laptop. Make a complet scan to bee sure the problem not is a type of virus...

The audio suttering and mouse lag is normal when the CPU been tortured by other process...

here is link to Kaspersky Internet Securty 2009, you have 30 days trial time. Give it a try if it not works out for you, I suggest you to do a clean install. It will not be a problem if you use the serial under your laptop if you not have instellation CD; we can try to fix it out... ;)
Let me know if this work for you...

And make sure you aren't using Power Saver in the power settings. I've seen many people complaining about apparent CPU problems only to find Vista was on the wrong power setting.

    lol :D

I not prefer CCleaner as registry "cleaner". I use Auslogics BoostSpeed wich, can do defrag and other stuff to keep your computer clean.

Also, at idle your system will run defrag (Build in Vista). I have at this point disabled it and use Auslogics BoostSpeed before or after startup/shutdown. It dosn't take long time becouse I have it always clean and run it often...

EDIT: I can still not see the picture :(
Can you upload it at imageshack.us ?

sure the image is just the graph from task manager showing how crazy my cpu is going and that there are no specific applications causing the dodgy behavior

Yes, I know how it is. But is there any processes wich use high amont of memory ? Or only CPU

Did you install any new drivers recently?

Also I would just stick to one AV as there are some pretty dodgy ones out and they are massive resource hogs, I personally found the trial Kaspersky to use huge amounts of resources and slow my system down alot.

My mem usage at idle is runs around 15% with 2G of RAM, but I like a very clean system.

well its 32bit OS atm, so not using all 4gb , btw can disc fragmentation lead to high cpu usage?

Depends, becouse HDD use CPU, but I don't thing it will make something soo big. Are you able to do a clean install?

Found the culprit, well culprits really a bunch of things were playing up. Scum number one was msn messenger plus (i noticed a drop of 38% cpu usage) after closing msn, and the cpu usage stayed down. The second one was my svhost services playing up things like tablet services etc...

thank guys, initially i thought my cpu was dying and sooner or later it wud go up in smoke.
