I have been a little nutty with SSDs lately. I replaced the initial Intel 320 160GB with an Intel 520 120GB. Then Newegg had a much cheaper price on the Intel 520 240GB so I am attempting to replace the 120GB with the 240GB.

I keep getting "A disk read error occured Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart" error when I try to boot from the cloned drive. I have tried both Casper and Acronis with the same problem.

When I boot from the Acronis Recover Manager CD I can install the 240GB in the machine and clone *from* the 120GB *to* the 240Gb and Acronis says the clone was successful, but I still can't boot from it. Therefore, it doesn't matter whether I do it in Windows or from a boot CD, I receive the same error when I try to boot from the 240GB.

I can write to the 240GB fine; and, when I reinstall the 120GB the W520 boots fine.

I am running out of ideas what to try next? Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

Did you clone the entire drive or just the windows partition. I think the bootloader is in the 100MB system reserved partition, but i could be wrong. also have you tried repairing your windows installation using a windows repair disc?

I cloned the entire drive. I have used Casper to do this before many times before, and I have never had this problem. (I even used Casper sucessfully to move from the 160GB to the 120GB.) Two partitions show up on the drive, one being the boot and one being system.

I don't have a copy of Windows 7 Professional to do a Repair Install, although I might be able to borrow one. I also suspected the bootloader might be the problem, but I didn't know for certain. The Tech at Future Systems Solutions--Casper--did not seem to recognize what could be wrong.

I have deleted the Recovery Partition on the drive, so I can't make Recovery CDs. (Not that I would want to.)

    Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the link! However, doesn't the bootloader have to be on the drive for it to boot from the *old* drive (now the 120GB)? It does boot fine from that drive. It is just a problem when I copy it.

Also I need Windows 7 Professional,I think, as that's what's on the machine. I have two copies of Ultimate and one of Home Premium lying around, but none of the Professional.

Yes, the bootloader has to be on the drive for it to boot, i mentioned the recovery partition in case you nuked it from the new 240GB while it was still on the 120GB.

The iso for windows 7 pro is in the thread i linked, you could download it and burn the iso to a dvd for example.

Thanks! You have provided much useful information.

Fortunately the drive that's installed does work. <g>

I'm a bit confused about the ISOs. I have seen X17-59186.iso and X17-24281.iso is the English version of Windows 7 Professional X64. I've seen both numbers for the same product on different sites. Do you happen to know which of these two ISOs is the correct one?

BTW, I did try *both* of the ISO's today, and *neither* is the version of Windows 7 Professional x64 which is installed on my Lenovo W520 and the Recovery Console will not run.
