Whoever had that great idea of putting the plastic cover over the tab on the ethernet cable to keep it from accidentally being pulled out can fall off a bridge.

NO WAY! I love those things. Let me explain:
Have you ever pulled a wire through a wall? Or tried to pull a cable out of a mess of wires in the back of your pc? With out that safety rubber the clip gets snagged and breaks off. This results in the cable falling out of the ethernet port.
Even stepping on one can break that tab off if it doesn't have the protection.
...I've hooked up way way way to many computers to make this statement. (I estimate around 10,000 to date). -

You make a good point. The only thing worse then an ethernet cable with the stopper is one with a broken tab. The cure for this are the ones that have the cover that you can slide along the cable.
