Yesterday I switched the ethernet cable from one laptop to the other and now the second is not working. I had a wireless card connected to the second laptop (was using an adhoc network to get internet on it). When I connected the cable everything froze so I disconnected the wireless card and the computer automatically restarted.

On startup Windows detects an "Ethernet Controller" but cannot install the driver. It gives me an error "This device cannot start (Code 10)".

Some googling suggests that the card may be fried, but I'm hoping that's not the case. None of the lights on the second laptop's ethernet port come one (everything's fine on the first).

Any ideas as to what I can try to figure things out. Or do I simply buy an ethernet to usb converter or a ethernet to pcmcia card.

(Sorry if this was posted in the wrong forum, not too sure where to put it.)
