My laptop is "allowed" for a total of 768mb of RAM. It has a 400Mhz FSB, and a 2.4ghz processor.

The RAM type here is: FSB PC2100 DDR SDRAM SODIMM

However the RAM type hereis the same specfications, but is a 1gb stick

Can I push the limits of this "768mb total allowed RAM" somehow?

You are limited by the motherboard/northbridge/memory controller. I doubt using sticks larger than the stated maximum would work.

Think about it: can you fit 3 liters of liquid in a 2 liter bottle?

No, so there's no way you can "trick" your computer to take more. The limit is there, and you can't put more.

I think that bottle has a firmware update.

    Bottle v1.2
    - Support for 3 liters
    - Support for Coke AND Pepsi
    - Ability to flash inside fridge

This is true even if you have the same exact specs of RAM?
If I were to take a a 1gb stick, and put it in this computer (it comes with 256 onboard), only 512 of that 1gb would be used instead of there being a total of 1.25gb?

Either that, or the 1GB stick wouldn't get recognized at all.

If they state that it can only handle 768MB RAM, they probably had a reason.

It has been done before, laptops have been upgraded above the advertised ram limit, but in all liklihood it won't work.

It was probably by luck or a bios update.

I remember flashing my BIOS once, how can I update my BIOS to accept more RAM?
