I know that in general, notebook GPUs are not upgradeable. But I was wondering if the Z96J is one of those 1% exceptions. Since it's designed to be built by the end-user, wouldn't it be possible to upgrade the GPU? Or is the GPU still untouchable even in this upgrade-friendly configuration?

Specifically, I'm looking at getting a lightly used Z96J for a really good price, and then dropping one of the new DirectX 10 cards into it later in the fall. Is this a pipe dream?

Does anyone have some Z96J build experience that could address this? Thanks.

If the chassis of the Z96J and Z96S are simialr, then an upgrade may be possible. Ice Tea (member on the forum who runs mxm-upgrade.com) seems to have listed that the Z96S has an MXM Type III slot, and that means high end graphics cards can be installed. You can check in this in the link below:
    http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Table.html

However, it may not support a new DX10 card, mainly because of the power and heat output concerns. Newer cards that support DX10 will have higher power consumption, and perhap, larger outputs of heat, and the cooling system and power supply for the notebook may not be able to support this.

According to the site, apart from the new ASUS C series.Only Z81s has an MXM GPU.And I am sure that ASUS S/Z96J does not have a modular/changeable GPU.
There are disassembly guides available and none of them show signs of being replaceable by anything but themselves.

Sorry, I must be blind. Yep, mujtaba's right, the Z96 doesn't appear to have an upgradeable graphics card, so it looks as though its not possible.

The Z96J has got an X1600, if I remember right, and does not use MXM or MXM II slots.

I have opened up my S96J which is practically identical to the Z96J and the X1600 is integrated into the motherboard. So it is not upgradeable.

It is not upgradeable. The system is only designed to handle the x1600. Anything else would damage it. There are size and thermal factors as well as mentioned above.
The Z96S (I actually thought it was the Z96Js) is what has replaced the Z96J, which has been discontinued by Asus. There's a thread in the Asus forums from a while back (so it may take some searching) that listed what the difference were going to be. I remember not liking the new version so much.

    z96 has a soldered gpu.

So it is not even as upgradeable as most other asus notebooks. It does not have a gpu card to remove

not even the slim but unobtainable chance that many notebooks have.
