It is a proprietary connection used by HP/Compaq to hook up a docking station or port replicator.

RogueMonk is right, the only thing that you can use the Expansion Port 3 is for docking station or a port replicator. I have never seen anything besides a Targus replicator and HP Docking stations for it yet, and I have been looking for a while because I have the older 2 version and want to use it for something, but not found anything other then those two.
