I have a usb key that got corrupted in some way. I tried some application that are supposed to recover some files when this happens, but it didn't work. I know I did someday stumble upon an application that showed me what was on my hard drive. I may explain myself wrong, but I was looking at the disk byte per byte. I guess that way I could still get back infos in plain text document.

You could try using something called TestDisk, I've heard good things about it being able to recover files when others can't.
