I don't know why, but there seems to be a lack of interest in the Express Card slot on the Dell XPS laptop. I know there are a zillion options for this, including extra USB ports on a hub and TV tuners, but for some reason, very little to be said about that. I know when I switched from my Inspiron to my XPS, the decrease from 6 to 4 USB ports really irked me, and this can be solved with an $17 hub that could be plugged into the express card slot.

Anyways, I wanted to create a central thread about great recommendations and configurations for the Express Card slot [for XPS 1730 users] that people may often overlook or not even know exists. There's some three hundred search results on newegg when you type it in, so I myself am still limited in knowing what I can stick in there that would be a sweet add-on.

So get posting! Express card plugin hardware that people should hear about.

I have an ExpressCard eSATA adaptor which I use with my Seagate FreeAgent Pro external hard drive, generic brand but has a Silicon Image controller iirc.

Does anyone know if bluetooth media remotes are offered in Expresscard 34? I have been searching and found an IR remote from HP, but the U330 does not have an IR receiver.

    awesome link :) reps ..

didn't know that they had GPIB interface too. With this you can control bunch of measurement instruments, very helpful for electrical tests

also, eSATA and get RAID going on :) ..

    - they did not mension the X-Fi Sound Blaster with 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound :)

Lack of interest? Not really. I think the reason is that the built-in features of laptops today covered the majority of what most average users need already. But it's not true that there is lack of interest in ExpressCard, this is the right technology that replaced the old PC Cards until the next replacement.

    Good point.

I have yet to scroll through all the options on that master-link of Express Card peripherals yet, as I salivated my way through the first few categories. I was wondering if anyone has seen a fan for cooling internals? Specifically one that could benefit an XPS laptop?

A fan would be pointless, since the ExpressCard slot is completely enclosed, just as PC Cards were.

I'm currently looking for a Bluetooth media remote that I can store in the laptop like the IR ones. My E6400 doesn't have IR, and the BT remote on the PCMCIA website sticks out from the side of the laptop.

Just for info sake now the Express 2.0 is coming soon.

My laptop's existing Express slot is lying vacant except for fitting the Dell remote in it.

When this Express 2.0 comes, will this existing Express slot become useless ?

Even USB 3.0 is on the way !

New technologies are rapidly coming dont know what will happen to the existing ones ?

    Hmmm... my Vaio isn't Dell...

But I have a PCMIA slot and a 34mm expresscard slot.

I have an SD card reader for the expresscard slot - but I never use it...
(Don't need SD cards any more)... so I don't use it...

My only use for them was a Canon Powershot.
Now I moved to an EOS 400D since I have the Vaio - i.e. no more SD cards.

For file transfer I use a USB drive (compatible with uni computers too)

How are those creative x-fi express cards supposed to be, or any other kind of express sound cards?
