USB 2.0 has transfer rates of up to and around 25-35 MB/s. You could compare that to Blu-Ray video bitrate, which is max 40 Mbps and translates roughly to 5 MB/s which is much lower, you need to add the audio bitrate as well though, probably can't be much higher than double the video amount which would get to 10MB/s.

It sounds like it would work, in the way that USB 2.0 doesn't appear to be a bottleneck.

    Good post.

External Blu-Ray Drives are a very good option especially when you want to keep your speedier DVD Superdrive.

Also if you get a new laptop in the future, or want to watch bluray elsewhere, USB drives are more flexible.

Very, very true, and you can transport them to anywhere that you want as well.

Yeah, that Bluray player is also good in the sense, no external AC power is needed. I nearly pulled the trigger on another external bluray drive, then I realised I had to carry a hefty adaptor for it. :(

If you get this, you now have a spare DVD drive, highly useful should you ever get a netbook. :)

Hah, that is a very good set of reasons, man, portability is a bliss.

That too!, Netbooks and their lack of Optical Drives... ugh.

An external Blu-ray drive, even the slim one, requires external power. But you don't need to carry an AC Adapter. You can just use a second dedicated USB port to power the drive.

I bought a 5.25" external case and a Pioneer Bluray drive and got it working with a bit of mucking around on my M1530.

In the end, I just put together a seperate media PC with it... couldnt be bothered setting it up each time I wanted to watch something

    It worked
I wouldnt say it was alright, because I found it better to spend another $1300 AUD on putting the media pc together. There was a bit of playing around becuase 8600mGT didnt support bluray normally

If you were really wanting to do it, sure go ahead, but I'd say its just easier to buy a normal bluray box to plug in (or a PS3) unless the reason your doing it is for portablity

    Okay.

Thanks for posting back, man, I guess that it will be a Blu-Ray Box for me.
