The best way is to get an internal burner & an external enclosure case. LG, Samsung and Pioneer make good burners.

    LG: Fast writing
    Samsung: Fast reading
    Pioneer: Solid & quiet

I have tested about 30 different models in the last 5 years and you cannot go wrong with those three brands above.

Here is a very popular LG burner.

    Newegg.com - LG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 22X DVD±R DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

EDIT: That's an IDE drive. Sorry about that. Please discard that.

As for an external enclosure case, I personally use a VANTEC NST-530SU Aluminum 5.25" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure case for my Pioneer BDR-205 Blu-ray writer via eSATA.

    Newegg.com - VANTEC NST-530SU Aluminum 5.25" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Most importantly though, you need to use good media like Taiyo Yuden. My personal favorite is Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R (TYG03). You can get them @supermediastore.com etc..

I've used a few and I can recommend some. I had the LG while I was out of the country and it worked great. No problems. It's also USB powered.
I also had the HP DVD556S for several months and it worked great. It only needed one USB port and it burned perfectly every time. It also supports Lightscribe if that's your thing. This is a newer update, the HP DVD557S.
I don't recommend the Sony external drives however. It might have been that I just got a bad one, but from the day I got it, it had severe vibration problems and was slow as hell.
I also had a Plextor one, can't remember which model but it's been discontinued. It was AC powered and really fast, but it died after just one month of use. I'd advise caution with Plextor as well. Again just my experience, perhaps others haven't had problems.

Oops! Glad they are sold out! Not so many choices @Newegg now. That Lite-On will do. Thanks! :)

I personally use this Lite-On drive and it's a solid drive too.
