I recently bought this enclosure fot my dvd-drive as i'm instaling a second hdd in the optical bay: USB 2.0 DVD CD DVD-Rom SATA External Case Slim Laptop | eBay

Now, when I try to install the dvd drive it will not show up in device manager
When I plug in the device without the dvd drive it is recognised as "SPIF301 USB2SATA BRIDGE USB DEVICE", and installs drivers correctly.

One time the dvd did show up as "cd-rom" in the device manager but disappeared at once.

    What can I do?

PS: I also installed a fenvi caddy in the OB, but it is i giving off vibrations, any tips?

    Yes.
First the power plug, then the usb connection. No difference-
When I insert the DVD while it is connected, the device disconnects..

I might still suspect not enough power as that is what happen on my DVD drive when I only plug in the main USB connection.

Try plugging one of the usb cables into a usb port on your laptop, and plug the other one into a port on another side of the laptop at the same time.

Also, the ebay listing mentions a CD with a driver on it, have you installed that?

Tried a number of cominations but it didn't work.

I copied the drivers to a usb stick and tried to install them. But there was no device to install... When pluging in just the bridge without the drive it wouldn't accept the drivers on the cd.

Ising the installer (which avast wants to open in the sandbox) I get "Copy Error", followed by "Usb storage driver has been successfully installed"

ok, next question; what is the DVD drive you are trying to use? is it a plain old DVD/ CD drive (Samsung, Pioneer, ect... who manufactured it? and if possible a model number could help out); or is it a Blur Ray/ HD DVD drive? (if it is this, a manufacturer and a model number would help).

So for the driver, you copied the entire disc to a folder on the USB drive? have you tried to simply make a copy of the disc image? (I only really know how to do that in Linux, not sure how to do that in Windows)

It is the DVD-drive that came with my laptop. Info:
    Sony Optiarc Inc
    DVD/CD REWRITABLE DRIVE
    MODEL NO: AD-7560S
    5V - 1.5A
I copied the entire disc to a usb drive. Can't see how it could matter.

hmmm... I'm not sure what other DVD drives use, but at 1.5A draw (most likely under load) 2 usb ports wouldn't be able to provide enough power to reach 1.5A (USB 2.0 is rated for 5V @ 500mA ie: 0.5A; so 2 would bring it to ~1A), still though it should work, even if it has only ~1A.

Having the disc image copied to your system, and mounted with a iso image mounting software (I use 'MagicDisc') will be the same as having the disc in a DVD drive (sometimes some instillation files need to keep the file hierarchy the way it was, in order for it to work -but not always). Try recopying the disc's data, and see if it works. Also, is there a website where you can download the driver from?

At this point I think that it is quite possibly the driver preventing it from working; otherwise it is just the crappy housing that isn't working right (in which case all you can do is buy a different housing -preferably something from a name brand company )

i use an external dvd enclosure very similar to that.
it works, but i cannot close the enclosure as it doesnt fit so well with the dvd of the sager8150 which is similar to the dvd that your 8690 uses.
the first thing i would try is make sure that the dvd sata slot is firmly seated into the connection. as i mentioned my dvd doesnt fit that well into the enclosure and the sata connection may not be connecting well enough.
also, i could use the dvd even with one cord only.

The drive is properly seated. I can remove the top of the enclosure and even remove the whole enclosure for that matter. It does light up even with just the usb connection, and I am able to eject the disc aswell.

how many dvd's have you tried?
if you are sure its seated properly and have tried many dvd's, it does sound like a faulty caddy esp the part where you say it was identified as cd-drive and then dissapeared.
re the caddy, did you get 12.5mm or 9.5mm? ive used the 12.5mm caddy in both me 8690 and my new 8150 with no issues whatsoever.

I haven't tried many DVD's. I would think that the device would show up regardless of whether it reads the disc properly, but I'll try anything.

The HDD caddy I bought was 12.7mm actually. It was a bit difficult to get it to match the sata port, but it turned out fine after some adjustments.
Here is the caddy type I bought:
New Laptop 12.7mm SATA TO SATA 2ND HDD HARD DRIVE caddy | eBay

I switched the disc from the original HDD compartment and it is now located under my left palmrest. I used the bracket to hold it in place, but it gives of a vibration which it didn't before (in the original HDD compartment).

i have the same odd and hdd caddy as you. my first hdd caddy would be detected for a while and then it would disappear. it turned out to be a faulty caddy that i returned. sounds a little like your dvd issue.
ive also never had a problem with vibration on the hdd caddy but i have a 5400rpm drive there.
