I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 750GB last summer, which I used with my Vista-installed laptop. I have approximately 400GB worth of material on it. Last September I bought a Dell E6400 with XP, which is now my main laptop. Now, on the XP-installed laptop, the external won't detect the HDD, citing that it malfunctioned and couldn't be recognized. So I went back to the Vista laptop, and it works fine. I've tried installing the software for the external on my XP, and no go. Any ideas? Thanks.

Is the hard disk pasword protected/encrypted, if not:

Try all the usb ports to make sure its not just one thats faultly.
Check for updated system drivers (bios and chipset).
Make sure it is plugged in as far in as possible.

I wouldnt think it is related to the operating system, so if it doesnt work i'd return the laptop under warrenty as there is obviously a fault.

Did you format the disk in vista when you got it?
If so i think it's because it's being a dynamic disc now and that's why XP won't show it to you..

So have a google with dynamic disc and xp or such.
