Well seems like ATI has something coming....
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=7995
Anyway I really am hoping that something like this comes out, because there are so many laptops out there that I turn away from because the card is so bad, not to mention dedicated graphics cards on laptops have such a premium price. Also with external you could use desktop GPU's!!!
PLS any ATI reps!!! Make something like this!!!
Also the Asus XG is nice but I do not think it has great power, and needs and external screen I want just an external box that connects to my laptop and makes it get much better gaming scores.

This is such an old news
http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/28/ati-to-release-power-hungry-external-video-card/
and I believe Asus has something going already

You know that article is from 4th March 2007... right?
-
-
yes but have they updated on it yet? I really want something like this! THey could make it if they focused more on it.
WOW it's 2008! I need to adjust my internal clock! -
-
-
Does Asus have anything in store it says right on that website that it was on track and is on planned release at Q2 of 2007 it's almost Q2 2008 and nothing from both fronts.
-
I thought of all people the notebook front would be the most enthusiastic about an idea like this if graphics companies like nvidia spent time on something like this they would build it if they knew the demand think about all the people that came on these forums crying because there laptop they brought home from the store cannot play so and so. With an external GPU you would not have to pay $3000 for a sager that has a battery life of 30 minutes.
p.S Also remember all the people trying to swap there graphic cards, and ruin the whole laptop! -
It is nearing its time and proper implementation... just taking for freaking ever to get there

ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
If you were using say, an IGP, then yes this external setup would be somewhat beneficial. But it could not compare to a $3000 powerhouse. -
Yes but it seems like the AMD version uses 2 usb ports not that might make much of a difference but there are other options like they could start making external PCI 2.0 slots.
-
This would be useless to me. Not practical, slow bandwith, and a hefty price tag.
-
Also with raytracing possibly making a come-back we might see graphics processors take a turn in design soon which would possibly slightly negate the need for external graphics cards for laptops.
-
Also there is a product which is retail if you really want one of these.
It tops out at ~65w iirc though.. http://www.magma.com/products/pciexpress/expressbox1/prices.html -
Stevil what is that box thing exactly and will it support a GPU?
-
Is this considered a external graphics card, but in no way will I pay $10 000.00. For that money i could get really good set of computers.
