Instead of a recovery DVD can I save it on an external HD? If so how? Also how do I clone my HD to the external HD at a current point of time? Thanks guys.

You'd need a program such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. How exactly depends on what program you have.

As far as the recovery CD's I'd say no for the most part. while it may be possible with certain computer brands it might be difficult to get it to boot from the drive and run the recovery if at all possible.

Just mZimm said, Acronis can handle this. You can create an image to save it to an external hard drive. Whenever your Windows is crash, the image from external harad drive through USB can recovery your Windows.
