I am choosing between the following options as external hard drives for my laptop.

My laptop has a 100GB 7200RPM internal. I intend to use the external for movies/tv shows/etc.

    Option 1: "MyBook Premium Edition"
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=224

    -500GB storage
    -Plugs into wall
    -Bulky
    -$160 CAD

    Option 2: "WD Passport Portable"
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=317&language=en

-NOT EXACTLY LIKE THE LINK (160GB not 250GB)
    -Powers from USB
    -Very small/lightweight
    -$120 CAD

Yes, the prices at my computer store are vastly different from the website prices. Basically, i'm trying to decide the following things:

    1) Is 260GB (100 interal + 160 external) enough?
    2) Do USB powered hard drives drain too much battery?
    3) Is one of these hard drives faster than the other?

EDIT: I found out the MyBook is 7200RPM, and the other is 5400RPM, if that influences your opinions.

    Thanks!

If i was going to buy one for storing movies the "my book" would be your best bet. For almost anything else i would choose the smaller more portable one. does it have to be a choice between the two?? why not buy the portable one and start saving up for the bigger one, by the time you run out of space you will have enough money for the other one too...
you are going to have to decide for yourself witch is more important. Portability or performance.

    p.s.
you could probably afford one of each if you look on ebay

Yeah, I guess so, but for now I'm hoping one of them will last me at least a year =/.

I watch a lot of TV and movies on my computer, but I mean, until yesterday I've always had a 60GB desktop, so maybe 260GB is more than I think... I'd LOVE the portability if it was enough space.

Anyone else who likes movies/tv think 260GB is too little?
