My Passport external usb HDD came with a bunch of software installed like "WD Sync". Can i just erase it all and use it like a usb thumb drive (drag and drop files into it) or will that ruin it somehow?

    yes you can,
you can format your external hard drive. You will loose the WD software, but it will work like any other external hard drive or USB memory card.
