What are the advantages of getting an external hard drive that's powered via AC adapter than through the USB?

hmm..I'm not quite sure but I think if there is more power input to the drive, than it can run faster, so generally, Ac powered hard drives have a higher rpm than USB powered ones. If your looking for a fast hard drive with a lot of storage space, your gonna look for an AC powered one. However, portable, mini hard drives usually run at less rpm and use USB or firewire connections. I would recommend you get a firewire drive as they will run faster. Forewire uses much less processing than USB ones. If your thinking of getting one, one of the best companies is Lacie. They are reputable and great value for money. http://www.lacie.com/

As a generlization, 3.5 inch HDD enclosures must have external power supplies, while 2.5 inch HDDs can run from usb power only, more power will not increase performance, with the exception of higher rpm and higher storage drives, which can still run from usb only.
