    Hi,

Over the past few days my Western Digital hard drive has been whining every 15 or so minutes for about 3-5 seconds. Should i be worried?

I've had the HDD for abou 10 months, and dropped it about 1ft about 8 months ago but thought nothing of it as it's been fine since.

I am currently downloading a large file directly to the HDD, could this be the cause of the probem?, although i don't think so.

    Any help?

    Thanks

well, I'm not sure, but are you using a bittorent client? I know that bitcomet has an option to save the downloaded data to the RAM and only once in a while to write it on the HDD, which might be the cause of the sound

If it's not that, then I have no idea

it's probably just the hard drive spinning up every now and then. is it a very loud high pitched whine? since you did drop it, some of the components may have been shaken loose, but i'm not sure how that would contribute to hdd whine.

no, seeing as it has been working fine for about 8 monts after the drop, i think it really unlikely that this has anything to do with the problem.

I agree, but it does sound like a problem, while still working transfer data. Good Luck.

Yep, thanks. I've ordered a 500gb Seagate drive this time, and will back up my drive beforesending it off for a replacement.

just make sure there's no dents or anything on the case to suspect it's been dropped :)
