From what I've read, 2.5"s are for notebooks and 3.5"s are for desktops. I want to make my own external HDD mainly for use to hold files and pass them back and forth between my desktop and notebook.

If I made my own 2.5" (smaller and more portable since it doesn't require the external source) would it work fine when I need to take files off my desktop?

    - Thanks!

    It would work fine.

And what you have heard has slightly confused you it seems. The diffence is 2.5" contains a laptop hard drive and a 3.5" contains a desktop hard drive. 2.5" can run off USB power alone whereas 3.5" need an external power supply. the other diffrence is 3.5" is cheaper for the amount of staroage space you get. But they both work with laptops or desktops without any problem
