I bought an external hard drive about 2-3 days ago and its been working perfectly until last night.
By accident it dropped on the floor about 2 feet from the ground and now it makes a buzzing noise 5 or 6 times and then the noise stops. But the computer cannot recognize the hard drive anymore.
Is there anything I can do to try to repair this or is it unrepairable?

It's dead Jim....

Yep sad to say sounds like there is internal damage to the drive.Only option is replacing it and hoping there isnt damage to the enclosure too.
-
Sorry mate...
It's buggered.
Grab yourself a new one. -
No, hard drives are not meant to be repaired. Be careful with them in the future; being sensitive mechanical devices, they can't take much heat, shock, pressure, or punishment of any kind.

I can't call you clumsy... I myself freakin dropped and broke my 300-dollar PDA last week...
shtuff happens -
Hi everyone,
I am having exactly the same trouble as the guy who started this thread, and i understand that i will have to get a new drive, but what about the data on the broken one, if a computer can't recognise it, can it be recovered ?
I got two seasons of prison break and about 10GB of music on mine

is it worth $300 US minimum
that's the cheapest you'll get a company to retrieve that data -
Try to google for some software, there are programs that can recover data from corrupt drives
-
If the motor fails to spin up, than you will not be able to recover any data from the drive.
What seems to be happening, is the drive starts up, than the heads slowly access the drive, and the smart diagnostics read that the head is scratching the surface of the disk. Than in an effort to fix the glitch, the drive respawns, and will do so 5 times, before finally shutting off.
You can take the drive out of the external enclosure, and then try hooking it to your desktop, but if the motor cannot stay on for mire than 5 seconds, than you will not be able to get anything off of the drive.
