What are some good external HD's that do not need an external power source that have firewire 800 connection.
Preferably 500gigs. I checked out the Western Digital Studios and they have bad reviews regarding the firewire connectivity.

Not sure if this was covered in your post (it was a bit vague on this point), but have you considered buying an external hard drive enclosure with FireWire 1394 and sticking a hard drive in it?

Well those hard drives usually require an external power source.

Yes, the only thing that I could think of is Western Digital's My Passport Studio:

Maybe the issue has been fixed by new firmware?
