I'm having trouble deciding which one to buy... I need a simple harddrive, not too much space is needed, I will just be putting in some videos and whatever else I can find to throw at it. Currently, a USB 8GB fits all my videos, but it will grow, so i'm looking for somewhat bigger. I never really thought I would need one at all and a USB might be fitting, but came to college and started downloading more videos. Also, should I buy a small USB (4GB?) for a more portable option or nah? I have got by easily without one my first semester in college. I feel i'd only use it for some pics, temporary files/vids, and word/ppt/etc documents that can be sent via email to myself, so it might just be a waste.

Black Friday sales... looking for some deals. Looking at these:

    WD Passport 59.99 with 1.99 shipping... 250GB 5400 RPM
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136228

    OR

    Seagate 250GB 5400RPM 49.99$ with free shipping
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148407

Seems like a simple choice to go for the cheaper Seagate, but i'm unsure of the quality. The small sample bias is throwing me off, and I keep hearing about Free Agent Pros, so the no name of the Seagate linked is worrying me. What's the difference? As for WD, it seems pretty basic/normal except it's more expensive so...

    Opinions please

Also, i'm trying to buy now within Black Friday sales... is there anything I should wait for that might pop up on Cyber Monday?

If you can find better external hdds for the pricing let me know... Tigerdirect, amazon, etc. I don't know all the sites, so I would appreciate help.

As long as you stick with the big ones, WD, Seagate, Hitachi you can't d much wrong.

I've got a WD drive (500GB) and like it, and its casing.

But if you want to save money, get the Seagate.

From looking at the product pag the WD comes with encryption software (which if it needs an instal is pointless as it wouldn't run on any "other" computers...)

Flash drive - haven't you got one?
Why a second if you have your HDD for storage?

Not much difference, just another series from Seagate, the freeagent go has a type of docking station. Maybe usefull when you hook it up to a desktop often not having to put the USB cable in the tower everytime but a bit pointless for a laptop. So maybe that's why the made a cheaper series without the docking thing. My experience with both have been pretty good and i think either one should be fine. The only reason i'm not buying Seagate externals anymore is that i once bought one from them that had a Maxtor HDD in it!!

I don't have one, lost my 2GB a while ago and have always considered purchasing another one, but maybe it's a waste of $$.

Well, Flash drives are better for carrying around - so get a small cheap one - ideally from a known name - but don't go for the pricey ones.

Some cheap 1GB one for example.

(Names like Kingston, Sandisk etc. Sony = expensive...)

Hi, I originally posted a thread whether I should buy an external hdd or not. Here's my original post.

I chose the Seagate, but I'm troubled whether to buy it or not or if I should just buy a USB flash drive. Currently have ~6GB of movies/videos and expect more, but I just started this collection.

Now I see this Hitachi and it would be a rather nice upgrade to my Lenovo T500. It is running on the manufacturer's original 250GB 5400RPM hdd, so I would buy the Hitachi, install that in my T500, and place the 250GB 5400RPM in an external HDD... although I don't really know how to do either (I will learn!). The thing is, I really never was a storage freak, I actually deleted a lot of stuff of my computers/memory/etc. because I didn't like having too much stuff. But as I said, recently, I started downloading more videos and might need it.

So what do you think? I would have to pay 80$ + 20$?~ for an enclosure, so it would be around double the price of just buying an external 250GB HDD. I want to buy the hdd purely for a performance upgrade.

Man I have had to rewrite this response differently each time... I never submit and refresh or go to another web page accidentally each time and my work is gone...

Anyway about the external enclosures, if I should buy the new hdd, I am looking at either
