I have a Compaq Presario 1200 computer.
I wish to continue to use an external monitor with it. (Medion 15" TTF screen)
I have had to reinstall Windows 98SE and can not now get my external monitor to act as the main screen.
On start-up both screens are active but halfway through booting into Windows I loose the second monitor which then closes down.
I can use the external monitor as an extension of the laptop sceen but can not then 'open' new pages on it. I have to drag pages onto it.
There must be something that I am not doing but so far have not been able to find the right place to activate the external screen in preference to the laptop screen.
Any help gratefuly received.

Sounds like your notebook is set up as the main screen. You need to invert that setting. I'm not plugged in right now to test this, but I'm pretty sure there's a switch for it in display settings.

Brian,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I have looked for just such a 'switch' but so far have not been able to find one.
Will have another go!

On the settings screen, drag the monitor #2 to the left of monitor #1.

Thanks for your continued interest
I have tried that. Unfortunately when I make screen #2 active it 'Extends' screen #1. I can then drag items from screen 1 onto screen 2.
If it is on the left or the right makes no diffence as to where the task bar lies, it is on screen 1 and so are all new pages that are opened. I can of course drag them onto screen 2, but that is not what I wish to do.

I think you missed my meaning, in settings it shows the monitor #1 and #2. You can reposition them so #2 is on teh left by dragging it over. Did you try that?

Thanks.
I did understand your point of positioning the 'Screens' with #2 on the left in settings.
The Taskbar stays firmly with the right had screen (#1).
#2 is then an extension of the laptop screen, to the left of the laptop. (which as it happens is the physical position) I can then 'drag' any item on the laptop (#1) screen out of the left side of the screen and it appears 'as if by magic' on the #2 screen.
This is not what I wish for, as I am sure you understand.

I'm out of thoughts then, perhaps someone else who does this can weigh in.

Brian,
Many thanks for taking the trouble.
