as I understand, even if a laptop has a 60hz screen, the nVIDIA GPU, let's say a 1070 or 1080 GTX can still make an external monitor run at its max refresh rate like 144hz or so right?
Like it's not limited by what the internal screen refresh rate is
just wanna make sure I understand this correctly

Yeap, till the time the port you are connecting it to has enough bandwidth for the specific Resolution/Refresh Rate combination.
I was running a 1440p 144hz monitor (Display Port) + a 60Hz 1200p (HDMI) monitor along side the internal 4k panel on the DM1 for a while.
In most cases its always better to use the DP/Thunderbolt ports for bandwidth hungry monitors.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Even on my Optimus-enabled Clevo, the HDMI and DisplayPort outputs are connected to the discrete GPU. Most high-refresh monitors only achieve their maximum rates via the DisplayPort - any with another HDMI input are limited to 60 Hz. My P670RS drives 4K/60 and 1440p/144 perfectly. It can even do one of those new 24.5-inch monitors with true 240 Hz panels, but those are limited to 1080p because of the limitations of DisplayPort 1.2.
I can't wait for wider adoption of DisplayPort 1.3/1.4, which will bring 4K/144 to the table.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.
