I have a dell xps 15 9550 that i connect 2 monitors to. Both monitors are 1920x1200 resolution and 24'. I had to buy 2 cables... one is an hdmi to hdmi cable to connect to one of the monitors. The other cable i bought was a usb-c to displayport to the other monitor and it works good.
I want to now connect my dell xps 15 9550 to just one old monitor i have which is called the dell 2007fp

I want to make external monitor as main monitor and want to extend the displays. Such as taking a window from my external monitor and bring it to laptop screen and vice versa. I went to monitor and options and i cannot get my external as main monitor while it extends. Anyone can tell me what im doing wrong? If i make my external main monitor, i can only get it showing on that monitor or duplicate the display. I cannot get it extend.
Right now im using laptop monitor as my computer and dragging windows to external monitor. Also the resolution now is 1920x1080... my laptop monitor. I want to make my resolution 1600x1200... the max resolution of the external. Can someone tell me what im doing wrong here? What makes no sense is i had no trouble connecting to 2 different external monitors with this laptop at my other apartment. But here when i have only this monitor, i cant make my external main monitor and having it 1600x1200 resolution and extending it to laptop. What am i doing wrong here?

okay i got it to work now. it does work with 1600x1200 resolution.
But can someone tell me if there are issues with higher resolution such as 1920x1200 or 2560x1440? I read reviews that if you go higher than 1920x1200, then dont get this.
So would it be better to get this instead since it i use it for higher resolution monitors, then this is better? Thus if i keep this one, i cant use it for monitors with higher resolutions?
