I bought a Samsung Syncmaster 226NW LCD monitor for my desk when I am not carrying my laptop around. My laptop has only a VGA output, and this monitor only has VGA input. The monitor runs at 1650x1050.
When I am using the monitor, there are random lines that appear on the screen, almost like the monitor isn't refreshing itself fast enough. When I say lines, I don't mean bright white lines like I've seen on some youtube videos I found while trying to find a solution for this. They are faint gray lines.
When I run the monitor at lower resolutions, the lines are still present (I thought maybe I was hitting the maximum amount of information that can be passed through VGA). I have tried changing refresh rates to no avail, though only 59hz and 60hz were available choices anyway.
Because of these lines, I returned a ACER 22" monitor that suffered the same problem, because I thought it was defective. Clearly however, it was not (though I like this Samsung monitor better anyway).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hmm......seems like a refresh rate glitch.......did u try unchecking the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display option" ???

Just tried other refresh rates, problem still persists. I am noticing that when I move my wireless mouse, the lines show up slightly more frequently. Is it possible my wireless devices are causing interference? If so, what the heck can I do?

It's electro-magnetic interference, get a better quality or singificantly shorter VGA cable.
Try moving it away from potential sources of EMF interference. Also try plugging the Monitor and laptop in different power sources, if they share the same ground loop you can also get similar interference.
Also if all else fails, before buying new hardware, try as a poor man's resonator in tieing a large loose knot/loop ( not tight) in the cables and see if that helps at all. -
A poor man's resonator eh? Never heard of that suggestion, nice. Thanks a lot man.
Yeah I had a feeling it was emf if nothing else, when I put the cord by unshielded speakers, the lines get more frequent. I will try the knot idea, and if that fails, I guess I'll get some shielded VGA cables. Thanks guys!
