I'm looking to purchase an external monitor for my Dell M1530. I'm a college student with limited desk space. Therefore, the monitor needs to have a small footprint or I'll need some sort of corner shelf to put the monitor onto. Mounting the monitor is not an option. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the product(s) that I should consider?

Most LCD monitors have a small footprint, I use a relatively large 26” LCD and the base of that is only 9” wide. If you buy a 24” or smaller I guess the bass should be even smaller. Wall mounting is not the only other solution, you can buy a VESA arm and attach it to the side of your table (or even to a book shelf), this will give you space and lot of freedom.
There are hundreds of VESA arms, here is one example:

Thanks for your reply! A VESA arm or clamp should work. Can anyone recommend a good one that does not require holes to be present in the desk or anything to be put through the desk?

I don’t know much about VESA arms or brands, but I know they support clamp type connectors (that doesn't require any holes or drilling ). At least this one does; a random review I found on the google. However, I have come across Ergotron arms few times, therefore they should be at least decent if not good. Maybe someone who use one of these can give you better advice.
BTW if you are going to use a VESA arm, then make sure the monitor you are going to buy also supports VESA mounting, most do but not all (for example my Samsung T260 doesn't).

the stand on my Dell 24" screen is pretty small, maybe about 6-7" wide by about 12" long
You can also buy a wallmount, but you should probably check with your RA if you can drill any holes into the wall for mounting.
