I am thinking about buying a USB external DVD-RW drive, but my concern is - is the USB 2.0 interface fast enough to play DVD movies in real time off the USB drive without stuttering etc? Also what is the maximum writing speed for external USB drives?

USB 2.0 is faster than any optical drive.

Old 4200rpm drives have significantly less throughput than most current external drives... and you could easily play movies on those. I'd be more concerned about the throughput on old flash drives and old memory cards.

DVD controller (1x) 1.32MB/s, USB 2.0 60MB/s (you will never see that maybe 25MB/s on a HDD) so no problem. Enjoy your movies.
