I don't want to lose my data and the reason why I put the SSD into my orico external enclosure is to transfer the data before I sell the SSD. I haven't had a problem before using other external enclosures for SSDs. Why is this enclosure requiring me to format the SSD first? Is this dependent on the enclosure? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did you ground yourself before installing the SSD?

The external enclosure should be 'transparent' and not require a format before using any formatted disk you put in it.

Can you try another computer? If the symptoms persist - get another brand/type of enclosure (may simply be having issues with the SSD'ness of your drive).

    Good luck.

What is the current format? And are you using the same system? Are you connecting using SATA?

You can also try a different drive in your existing enclosure; if it asks you to format that drive, then there's probably an issue with the enclosure.
