External what? USB? Firewire? I ask because you mention "to start with" - Macs can't boot from USB externals, only Firewire. So if it was on PCs and booting them as the startup disk, and now you're trying to boot it on your intel Macbook, it simply won't. Not to mention the partition and OS differences. But it should still show up, once OSX is up and happy.

Just be methodical about it. Does the drive show up when you hook it to any other computer? Yes. Then it's your Macbook. If not, then it's the enclosure's controller or the drive itself. Etc. You need to narrow things down before anyone can go "oh, it's just a driver problem. do this and this and that."
