Hi, Last week i wrote that my Western Digital My Book's Adapter had blown. I managed to get a netgear adapter to work. Its 12V 0.75A but the my book one's 12V 1.5A and as a result the hard disk isn't spining although the light is comming on .. is there any way to increase the current through the netgear adapter?

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If you've got two, you could wire 'em up in parallel, but you can't change the fundamental specs of an AC adapter just like that. Short answer: no.
Why don't you just buy a new adapter...?

Did you try to get a 12V output out of a desktop power supply or you don't have one available? That should power you HDD just fine.

how do i get a 12V supply out of desktop powersupply?
I would love to buy an adapter but my parents who are going to pay for it don't trust ebay and want to buy from amazon.. problem is that on amazon it costs 21 pounds which is like a quater of what i paid for the drive and they don't want to spend that much cash.. also they're waiting for monday when they can phone and check if western digital is selling the adapter for cheaper or giving a free one... problem is that the drive is out of region as far the warrnaty is concerned as i bought it in india and using it in UK.. so its fat luck if western digital gives a free one... but i still have to wait and waste my time. -
Do you have a desktop PSU? I can help you with this or else I wouldn't have mentioned it.
-
yes i have a whole desktop.. so how do u do it?
-
I'm pretty sure Twiz57 means that you need to crack open the external hard drive and install the hard drive into your desktop.
-
oops not possible.. the controller on the hard drive is such that i would loose all my data..if that's the case i'll just wait 1 or 2 weeks for the new adapter.

Greg's funny! That's not exactly what I meant. I said borrow the PSU from the desktop and use it to power up your external HDD. It's the best PSU available that I'd power a 12V device from.

The plug that you usually plug into you desktop harddrive has +12V (YELLOW) GND (BLK) GND (BLK) +5V (RED). That'd be one way to get 12V out of.
-
..and you need to borrow the cable and the plug from your old AC adapter, the one that's been shot. This is where you'll need a multimeter to test the polarity. Polarity is usually pictured on the back of the old AC adapter. Follow that and your HDD should be ready to go.

Western digital are sending me a free replacement adapter so i'll just wait for it to come in 2-3 days.
