I connected my 250GB Lacie external harddrive to my laptop. I switch my harddrive on, the light glows orange. Nothing else happens. The harddrive is running, but windows does not pick it up. I connect my Lacie to my desktop, exactly the same problem.

Usually the orange light glows, then when windows picks up the drive and reading data on hd, the green light goes on.

One of my friends borrowed my hd yesterday, and all I could think of is that he accidently dropped it and now its not working anymore. My hd work fine before that. I keep my hd in a safe place all the time when not using, I take good care of my pc peripherals so I know it can't be me.

You think I should confront him? Or could it be something else. According to my knowledge I think the hd is knackered. I even tried to go to Device Manager, scan for new devices, disk management, etc.. nothing.

If my drive IS knackered, is there any way I could still get my VALUEBLE data off the drive?

 very frustrated.. will appreciate your opinion. Cheers

try to turn it on first then connect it to the laptop. Dis prob. won't work, so i'd ask ur friend if he did anythin to it. If he dropped it or somethin, it cud jus be a loose connection inside the external hd, so id prob take it apart and check everything (if yur comfortable w/ that sort of thing).

Is your HD still within its warranty period? If it is, then you could just contact Lacie. Do note that your warranty is voided if you open up the drive.

    Nope tried that not working.

It is under one year old, the shop I bought it from said I must bring it in to them. In the meanwhile I also e-mailed LACIE for information.. Hopefully I'll get it sorted out.

Hint: Never borrow out your computer stuff to friends! A year or 2 ago I borrowed out my 8port switch hub, also the same, when I got it back, it didn't work. And who was to blame? Rather be rude and say no than say yes and loose your money and valueble data, and then it's not even your own fault that it's broken! Crud.

    Cheers for the replies guys.
