i recently purchased a 320 gb external hdd and it came formatted in NTFS file system. Initially i transferred my pictures folder (4.75gb) and it copied it in 6 mins. i was really impressed with the speed but when i connected the drive to my xbox it wasn't getting recognized.

So i formatted the drive to fat32 and it works on xbox now but it took 20 mins to copy the same pictures folder.

why is there so much difference in transfer speed? is it normal when changing file system from ntfs to fat32?

i didnt run hdtune initially when i got the disk but after formatting to fat32 it gave me an average of 30MB/sec. Is this speed good for a 7200rpm external hdd?

Idon't know why it's slower on the xbox, but probably its the xbox's fault.

But 30MB/s on USB is pretty good I'd say.

it has nothing to do with the xbox

with NTFS - copying pics folder from laptop to hdd took 6 mins
with Fat32 - copying the same folder from laptop to hdd took 20 mins

Can somebody comment on the difference of speed between NTFS and FAt32?

Hmm...does the Xbox use USB 1.1 or 2.0? That is the only thing I could think of that could possibly cause that.

Tim .. xbox is not the issue ... i mentioned xbox in my first post so as to indicate the reason for formatting the drive to fat32.

The problem is after formatting to fat32 it takes a longer time to transfer files from pc to hdd (eg in post#3) .. i just wanted to know why is that so
