I'm planning to connect my notebook to my 32" monitor.

What is the best practice for switching between mobile mode (max 1080p) and external (max 1440p) in regards to a clean desktop in both resolutions? Connection will be via DP.

What do you mean by "clean desktop in both resolutions." You configure the display arrangement, resolutions, etc via Windows settings or the NVIDIA control panel. It's all rather straightforward.

Are the settings saved for each resolution or do i have to rearrange everything each time i switch between displays?

I don't need to do anything when going from my internal display, office G-Sync monitor, and living room TV.

Just remember to set both monitors to 100% display scaling. Higher display scaling leads to softer and grainier images and text.

Why switch when you can use both? It will improve your productivity, and you won't need a separate keyboard in this scenario.
