Hey guys, I have a slight dilemma.

my 20" Dell LCD often have refresh lines at the horizontal ends of the screen and sometimes the whole top half. I don't know why, but it's been like this for a while. It uses VGA and connects to my notebook's VGA output, it's refresh rate is 60Hz.

Under a really dark background or a white background, I can easily notice the refreshing of the LCD. If I try and push the VGA cable in the back of the LCD monitor hard, it gets less noticable but still there.

I'm not sure what to do, I really like the monitor, but it's really annoying and can get tiring for the eyes. Unfortunately, I don't have another computer to compare it to, so I'm out of luck there.

I know about high end DVI/HDMI cables and but does high end VGA cables exist?

    Any ideas, suggestions or comments?

picture gets dull the longer the cable. a double feret shielded one will keep that from happening.

To be more specific, I'm not sure if it's the refresh rate, but I see flickering lines. Something like if a person uses a camera on a CRT TV, there are lines flickering.

Thanks, I'll take a look at those.

have u checked the monitors refresh rate in screen settings? Do you have any magetic materials or equipment (e.g. video camera's) close to the monitor?

You're getting the refresh lines because you're doing a double analog conversion with cheapo low-cost low-quality cables and components.

Use HDMI or DVI and you won't have this problem any more.

It's actually a ground loop, or poor grounding. Try plugging both laptop and monitor into the same outlet, getting a better quality VGA cable, or using a 3 prong to 2 prong ground adapter on the monitor.

I would try the outlet, followed by the ground adapter, then a better VGA cable.

Perhaps. But the problem is avoided altogether by switching to a digital signal i.e. DVI or HDMI.

But is that even an option as he said monitor has VGA and many notebooks only have VGA? ;)
