My Dell Inspiron 700m has passed all hardware tests (including CPU, fan and temperature sensors). However, the CPU slows down after a period of use, and the fans never turn on. I can turn them on manually using I8kfanGUI, and it does work.
Any ideas as to the problem? Is it hardware? CPU or motherboard? Software? XP Problem?
Thanks

is the temperature sensors working ok?
-
Dell diagnostics reports that the temperaure sensor is OK.
Are there other diagnostics available to do more thorough testing? -
Run HWmonitor and post back with your idle & full load temps

I get the same problem too, it is very strange, but it happens on my E1505.
It seems like their is some kind of driver conflict somewhere, which causes this problem to reoccur.
The only things which I have found which work are reinstalling the operating system or using i8kfangui.
On my laptop I have checked the connectors and everything is connected fine, so it must be the sensor driver is not being pushed hard enough from the onboard microcontroller.
This could probably be fixed by getting a better thermal diode, but the knowledge and work needed to do that is pretty up there.

Here are the temps from HWMonitor 1.10.
I have been using the computer for a while with the fans on max from I8kfanGUI. If I have the fans on auto, the temperatures will rise and the CPU will slow down.
Right now, Start->My Computer->rt Click Properties shows 1.79GHz (1.8GHz CPU), but if I have the fan on auto, it does not come on, and will slow down to 600MHz, then about 220MHz, and once it slowed down to 71MHz!!! A reboot fixed the problem briefly. 600MHz is tolerable, but below that, the computer is unusable.
Is it normal for there to be only 2 temps, and none specifically from the CPU?Attached Files:

Here is the CPUID after 7 minutes of use with the fan set to auto, which means they don't turn on!!

I am attaching more screenshots showing the progression. Eventually, the temperature reaches 92/72, and CPU speed reaches 287MHz.
I then restart the fans on manual, but the temperatures do not come down. Even when I exit and restart HWMon, it is the same. But if I reboot, the new temps are 43/43.
This is bizarre!!!
Can anyone explain what is going on??? -

That is no good my friend. You almost reached 200F there.
I recommend doing so open heart surgery on your laptop.
You need to get the dust out of their and put arctic silver on the processor (between the processor and heatsink).
Your temps are really high, and oh HWMONITOR is not correct, since a Pentium M cannot clock down under 600Mhz. Its not possible for its multi to go that low, so the lowest it will ever run is 600Mhz.
I would try downloading "core temp", or using i8kfangui to monitor the temperature of your processor, since HWmonitor is yielding some wild results.
What does i8kfangui say for your cpu temp?

K-Tron,
Thanks for your reply. Dust was cleaned out a few days ago - the problem is that the fan does not turn on (for whatever reason).
When the fan is manually activated through I8kfanGUI, the temperatures stay low.
The problem is in figuring out why the fans do not activate when in auto mode. -
The Dell diagnostics all test OK. The fans turn on manually and keep the system cool.
The problem is that when the fans are on auto, they do not turn on, which leads to the system overheating. -
I guess you havnt done any sort of Keyboard Firmware flashing or BIOS changes?
-
No - though the BIOS was reset, but there are no power settings in the 700m BIOS.
