Hello all,
I bought a new Inspiron 6400, 2 GB ram, intel duo 2 core, 256 mb ati radeon x1400 video card laptop about a month ago. I noticed that it seemed to be getting really hot, so I installed 18kfangui to control the temperature.
Recently I've noticed that when doing CPU intensive things like transcoding an avi file to burn to a DVD that the BIOS and 18kfangui seem to 'fight' for control of the fan. The software keeps the fans on low, since the temperature never goes high enough to trigger the medium speed setting. The BIOS however seems to think that the fans need to be going faster, so it tries to speed them up. The result is a low speed fan that seems to go into medium speed for about half a second, only to be lowered again by the software. This keeps repeating itself and I don't think it can be good for the fan. For now I disable the software when doing things that will heat up my processor, but I think there must be another option.
Is there anyway from disabling the BIOS control of the fans completely so it doesn't try to take them over? The temperature at which this starts to happen is 60 degrees (C), and I have them go to fast at 70 degrees (C).
