I'm considering getting an external USB enclosure for a 5.25" SATA Blu-Ray reader. Reading reviews of many of these a lot say the fan is loud. But I'm wondering if a fan is even necessary for a Blu-Ray drive? I would just disconnect it altogether. I can get an enclosure for $30 from TigerDirect (currently on sale).
Is there free software for playing blu-ray movies because an OEM Blu-Ray drive is only like $40. I hear DivX + VLC should work, but can anyone verify?

Nevermind, found this for $97 at Amazon. Slim Blu-Ray Combo drive...
Amazon.com: Blu-Ray USB External Player DVDRW: Electronics
Costs about $20 more than a 5.25" with enclosure but a billion times more portable. And comes with software. Not the greatest but just in case I can't get it to work otherwise I have something.

No you don't need a fan for a bluray player. -
