    Hi all

    I have an ASUS Zenbook which I just upgraded by swapping out the hard drive for an SSD. I reinstalled Windows 7 Home (64 bit) and other programs I use, all from scratch. As expected the laptop is faster than before. However, the fan is running much more than before, which surprises me, as I expected the opposite, especially after cleaning out a large quantiity of dust that had build up inside the machine.

    Any suggestions/tips how to debug this issue?

    thanks

    How long has it been since you refreshed your laptop (clean install)? Check your system processes and CPU utilization. With a clean install there can be processes that run more frequently up front if they're caching data or creating a database, anti-virus scanning, etc. Also were you using balanced or power saver mode but maybe on "high performance" mode now in the power profiles? Run a simple app like HWMonitor and check temps of your components to see if they're running hot or something. Also, many laptop manufacturers include their own system software that auto-magically manage fans, etc. Perhaps you need to install that app?

    Thanks for the response. I took your advice and downloaded soms updates from Asus' website Notebooks & Ultrabooks - ASUS ZENBOOK UX32A - ASUS For now, it seems to be running better. Hopefully that has resolved the issue. I'll report back if there are further issues.

    After installing/updating all the manufacturer driver and Windows updates that your new install needs;

    Disable the sleep/power saving features of your notebook (hibernation, sleep, etc.) and leave the computer plugged in overnight. This should allow your system the idle time it needs to do it's background maintenance as it sees fit. After this self initiated maintenance, I would also recommend you do something similar at least once a week too.

    At the bare minimum, I would do it again (leave it on and idle overnight) on a Wednesday or Thursday evening after each MS' Update Tuesdays (second Tuesday of every month). This will allow the background maintenance to be performed as required and allow you to have your notebook's full attention the rest of the time when you need to use it for your tasks.

    Edit: just noticed that you use Windows 7. NP. But Windows 8.1 works much better at keeping your system optimized and ready to go with it's automatic/background/idle maintenance routines.

    Just a thought, and not necessarily helpful. The computer will become so much more quieter after installing all SSD that the fans will be the only noise remaining. It is acute reaction.

    Hi Enero,

    I'm looking in to info to upgrade to ssd storage on my ux32a and saw your post. Any advice on snags to look out for and information on the drive you went with would be great. Also, did you have to/manage to disable the 24gb cache drive?

    Thanks,
    T
