When I first bought my notebook, the fan would only turn on during intensive computing.

After 6 months, I noticed that it stays on all the time, even during idling. The fun is still quite, but it's on. Besides XP, there is only McAfee running on the background.

What could be some of the problem? Can it be a mulfunction?

Also, what is the life span of the fan?
The processor temperature is same as it was in the beginning: 30 something degrees.

i belive it is a heating problem, because Celeron dose note support speed step technology, so the processor runs all the time, so the fan needs to run alot too.

It didn't do it for first few weeks. The case of the computer is the coolest I have ever touched (all computers in electronics stores on which i put a palm of my hand), felt way warmer than this one. The power adapter is also barely warm.

So, I don't think it's the design of the processor.
    Thanks for your response anyway.

that's absolutely not the issue, the computer is as clean as new, it's used in the office only, and there is virtually no dust. The vents are perfectly clean.

No, how do I do that, and what do I check it for? What could have changed in the BIOS settings from the initial times when the fan was mostly off?

press F-10 or Delete while the computer is starting up. then go to the end page or something and select "Restore to Defult" then save and exit.

I didn't change anything there except for password. Does something change there byitself?

Even if you run it in a relatively clean office, dust will still accumulate, and over time it'll decrease the cooling efficiency of the sysem. Put the system to sleep, and give the exhaust a blast with compressed gas, and see if a lot of dust flies out.

also, hair can also clog up the vents. if you have the time, maybe you can open it up to make sure it doesn't have a nasty layer of gunk accumulated inside....
