    ^ Agreed.

If you want to save money: Hitachi 7K500 250GB.

    I'd like sth cheaper.
    I'm thinking of
    Hitachi 7K500 250GB
WD Scorpio Black WD2500BEKT (Is it a new version of this drive?)

Do you have any benchmarks. I could only find tests of 500gb ver.

That's the challenge, finding out what WD drive has only one platter.

The one on Newegg has 188 reviews, it's probably the dual platter.

As long as you don't know which WD 250GB has one platter, Hitachi 7K500 is the way to go.

I can find in shops WD2500BEKT and WD2500BEKT Scorpio Black. I have no idea they are the same. The hdtune' screenshots of wd2500bekt shows not very good result and they are dated in 2009. Maybe now is a new version of this drive. I can't find out.

I'm interesting in WD because of very good result in multi tasking.

Maybe somebody has any benchmark (hd tune) of 7k500 250gb?
It it slower or faster than 7k500 500gb?

I don't have the benchmarks but no one is going to notice a performance difference between 250GB and 500GB 7K500.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want a single platter drive?

It was me saying that, but don't count too much on substantial differences though.

However, if given the choice, I'd always prefer single platter.

If you're focused on performance, then wouldn't it just make more sense to ask a question of "What's the fastest hard drive I can buy that is under $100 and at least 250GB?"

You're assuming that the fastest drive is single-platter, and that the speed difference will be something noticeable.

Noise and vibration are very important for me.
I'd like to reach the compromise between speed and silence.

I've got a place for 2 HDDs. The first think was to buy fast single platter for OS and silent 5400 500gb for data.
But now I'm thinking of buying only one 500gb HDD and have it alone in my laptop. The capacity is enough for me.
I don't know which solution is better. Maybe the second one for quieter work.

That's why I try to find out about adv. and disadv. of 7k500 500gb and WD5000BEKT.
I've read Seagate is too laud and make a lot of vibration.

How about a 64GB SSD for your OS and applications?

Crucial C300 64GB is about 135 euro including shipping from Crucial.com

Then get a single platter 320GB 5400rpm drive and you probably got the most silent solution.

Have you considered getting an SSD for your main work, and using an external USB hard drive for storage capacity when needed?

I'd like to, but crucial is 157euro (with shipping to PL), 7k500 500gb is 65euro.
    I think I will buy 500gb hdd.
So the tread can be closed.
    Thanks.
