I'm wondering which processor can be fitted on a Santa Rosa laptop, specifically for my T61, currently Ive the T8100 which is OK, but since I'm backup some movies reencoding the whole thing, Id like to speed things up.

Is it worth waiting a while until the fastest CPUs cheapen at eBay?

    T9500
    X7800
    X9000

Top of the line CPUs never really drop off in value, because of their potential for use in upgrades, so no real point in waiting.

A T9300 will be the best CPU for you. Its not alot slower than the X9000, and offers a lot more bang for the buck compared to the T9500. For video recoding, a Merom is significantly slower than a similar clocked Penryn.

Get the T9500 dont get the X series it runs hotter and uses more battery with minimal speed increase.

I wish Lenovo would update the BIOS on the T61p to run 1066mhz CPUS as well.

The T61p has PM965 motherboard, which won't support 1066MHz CPUs, so BIOS update won't help.

Yep, as sgogeta has said, it's not a BIOS limitation, it's a chipset limitation. Nothing Lenovo could do, even if they wanted to.

Well if the bios allowed 1066mhz chips they would run at 800mhz and be slower but you could run power saving P series.

Recoding movies with my actual T8100 takes around 100-170mins. I'm asking if for example I want till the end of 2009 whether the prices on the T9300 or T9500 would lower to like 100 bucks or so.

I plan on keeping my Thinkpad for as long as I can, since I have no inclinations on going WS I'd like to max it out maybe in a year or two.

It won't drop in price much, if at all.

And no the BIOS will never support it since the hardware won't match.

Yeah, end of 2009 expect to pay about 240-250 for the T9500. Not worth waiting.
