Probably the 250GB Hitachi 7K500. If you can find it...

I thought the 500GB Travelstar Hitachi 7k500 will be the fastest?

the 500gb version will have 2 250gb platters i believe, and the 250gb one will have 1 250gb platter. Equal platter density = equal transfer rates, and fewer platters mean less seek time, less power requirements, and sometimes less noise levels.

yes... single platter drives are always slightly faster than their dual-platter brothers, but I'm not sure anyone would really notice the difference in real life.

I just got a Hitachi 7K320 320GB drive and it seems just as fast as my previous 7K320 160GB drive, but does run noticeably hotter.

Although I have done some recent testing, and it seems that the double platter configurations generate more IOPS than the single platter solutions, despite the slightly longer seek times. Its far too complex to explain now. I may through up a thread on it later. Any of the late 7200rpm drives, 7K320/7K500/WD3200BEKT/7200.4 will be all fast drives short of an SSD.
