For lowest latency go with G.Skill with a CL of 4

For performance go with Crucial, cause they use higher performance memory chips (mircon).

For real time using, you will notice absolutely no difference between high end memory and generic brand memory.
Just make sure that the memory that you buy has a lifetime warranty.

Don't want to hijack the thread, or create a new one (should I?). I've got a Dell XPS M1710 and I want to upgrade the RAM to 4GB. The thing is, I've seen some users on Dell's site saying that their WEI rating for RAM doesn't go up after the upgrade - maybe due to the speed of the RAM?

So, as the zxNoteB asked, what would be the fastest RAM available for my laptop?

The XPS 1710 also supports a maximum of Pc5300. It does support 4gb of memory, so you can do a 2 x 2gb memory configuration. WEI is a very bad benchmark, so dont pay any attention to it.
Before the upgrade, download SISandra, and run the memory benchmark tools, and run it after installing 4gb and you will see an improvement.

If you have a 32bit operating system dont bother installing more than 3gb, cause a friend has 4gb installed in his machine and the 32 bit operating system only detects 3.1Gb of memory. He has the 7950GTX in it.
If you want to be able to use all 4gb, you will need a 64 bit operating system.

    Fastest RAM is PC2-5300 DDR2-667 4-4-4-12.

You can also try out PC2-6400 DDR2-800 5-5-5-15, which will downclock giving the same frequency and timings as above.

Upgrading to 4GB isn't a good idea, because your notebook won't recognise more than 3.2-3.5GB. (Irrespective of the OS)

But if you get a cheap 4GB Kit, then go for it !!

I have Vista 64bit installed. Why won't it see more than 3.2 GB regardless of the OS? I thought a 64bit OS would recognise it.

Its the chipset (basically the northridge/32-bit memory controller) --> 945GM/PM.

Won't recognise more than 3.5GB, even if you have a 64-bit OS installed.

Strange though, why would they offer it as an option when you purchase (with no warnings about this), and also as an upgrade option (I'll check again in a bit). Are you sure about this?

Edit: The guys at Dell's forums seem to be suggesting the same thing. Guess I'll think twice before upgrading.

That used to be the case, but no longer. You will be hard pressed to find a kit of DDR2 RAM using the fabled Micron D9 chips. Regardless, OCZ is also a good pick, and quite frankly is a lot more customer oriented than Crucial.

To the original poster, peep this: OCZ 4GB DDR2 800 SO-DIMM (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory. Solid RAM, superb price with free shipping and a $20 rebate.

    And yes, I know its 800MHz... ;)
