    Hi all,

I got a Sony laptop ~17" that has a faulty lcd inverter. It flickers a lot and the backlight goes off completley after awhile. Need to reconnect the lcd inverter and it will be okay for a few mins. I have a spare LCD inverter from a 13" Sony laptop. It doesn't say the voltage on the capacitors. Is it dangerous to plug that in and give it a go? The socket doesn't match so I'll have to resolder the wires to the circuit.

Last time I touched a flourescent tube circuit board (which looks pretty much like the lcd inverter) it exploded in my hand. So I'm a bit worried. Cos the lcd inverter seems to be really hot as well and I don't want it exploding anywhere near me.

No, if the voltage is different, I wouldn't give it a try. The LCD panel size doesn't match, so the inverter for the smaller panel, probably won't work anyway. If your notebook is under warranty, then just ask Sony to replace it for you. If not, then you should purchase a proper Sony AR LCD inverter, and install that. Hope this helps.

The notebook is more than 3 yrs now, I have professional 3 yr onsite warranty on it but expired in Sept. Its still a very fast laptop, think its 2.4ghz with 1gig of memory.

My company dispose laptops that are out of warranty. They rather spend more money buying new laptops. Which is really a waste, I guess I'll just have to figure what I'm gonna do with it. Most probably gonna be a test machine.

I would think the voltage/amp would be different too. Since the screen size is a big difference. Its a pity that searching on google and looking at the inverter doesn't tell you any information on the power specs.

    Thanks for the help.
