This may sound like a strange question, but does anyone know of a Female Scart to USB cable, or a way to make this work?
Basically we have an old security camera above our front door. It is connected to scart - intended to be connected to a TV and recorded. However we only have a VCR, and this records maybe 8 hours tops.
I want to hook it up to an old laptop, with a biggish hard drive, and record onto hard drive. This means hundreds of hours of recording as long as the power stays on.
I need a way to connect this scart lead into the laptop however. If anyone can think of a better way to do it please be my guest, I'm very open to suggestions, however the only thing I can think of at the minute is USB.
How practical does this sound? Is it even possible? Any advice, or links to cables, welcome! :-D

you need a scart to conventional video adapter. Once you get that you can run the conventional video into just about any capture device out there.
But I will bet you that buying a new style USB powered security camera will be loads cheaper. -
I was thinking more convenience since I already have a camera set up but it sounds like it'll be a lot of hassle =-( I was hoping there was a simple scart to USB, plug and play kinda thing =-P -
USB is for digital data. Your scart connector is carrying analog video in a couple of different ways.
If you're going for a new usb camera, get an IR/color capable one with integrated IR emitting LEDs.
There is video recording software available that will constantly monitor the camera but only record (take up disk space) when the image changes. If there is any kind of movement in the image, that counts as a change and recording starts. Big saver on disk space. I'm pretty sure that most of this software can also send an email on movement triggers if that kind of info is useful to you. -

The ones I've seen are configurable for delay as well as the amount of 'movement' that will trigger a record session. But if you have 'hundreds of hours' of disk space available it probably is not a problem for you. Just an additional config option for you to try out.
